There are a lot of utility apps available for Windows, but many of them you don’t actually want thanks to the plethora of malware posing as much-needed software. This is a field where you will need to be careful and do your research, but if you do your due diligence then you can find some pretty useful apps. One of the better ones available over the past few years has been TuneUp Utilities 2013, and now they have launched their brand new 2013 version with a lot of improvements and integration into Windows 8. TuneUp Utilities contains multiple functions such as a disk cleaner, browser cleaner, registry cleaner and more.

The first thing you will need to be aware of is that, even though this isn’t free software, it still bundles the AVG Toolbar into it’s installation. During the install process you will need to choose “custom” rather than “express” or you will find yourself, not only with the toolbar, but with an AVG home page and a new default search provider.

Once, you have safely avoided any unwanted additions during installation then you will find a solid utility for keeping track of what’s going on behind the scenes on your PC and cleaning up files that are no longer needed and simply wasting precious hard drive space. The app presents a concise “Optimization Status” window that will provide all of this information in one location.

From there, you can launch any of the utilities bundled within the service, displayed under 5 tabs. You can also switch to the “Category” view, which you may find easier to use.

While the app can do a lot of favors for you in terms of cleaning and speeding up your PC, you may want to keep an eye on it and rein it in from time to time. For instance, it tried to turn off my Live Mesh syncing to speed up my computer. Unfortunately it does things like that in the background without giving the user an option,
